Kinde is a respected farmer whose most valued possession is a single ox. One day he comes home from the field and finds his wife with another villager, and in his anger he badly injures the man. The attack starts a bitter feud with the man's family, so the village elders banish Kinde until peace returns, and he sets out with his ox.
On the road he reaches the home of a woman living alone, the last survivor of a family killed by bandits. She takes him in and shares what little she has, and a bond grows between them. Then her enemies come looking for her.
